Position Purpose: What Is a Port Worker at Transnet?
The primary purpose of the Port Worker role is to provide general labor support in port terminal operations, ensuring the safe, clean, and efficient handling of cargo and operational equipment. As a port worker, you will play a crucial role in maintaining operational flow, assisting with cargo movement, and supporting logistics activities in compliance with Transnet’s safety protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
This is a physically demanding but rewarding role within one of South Africa’s most strategic and high-traffic cargo terminals.
Key Responsibilities and Position Outputs
As a Transnet Port Worker, your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Cleaning and maintenance of port equipment and machinery, including:
- Ship-to-shore crane windows
- Crane cabins and other handling equipment
- Performing routine inspections of cargo containers to ensure
- condition and compliance
- Supporting reefer monitoring operations (refrigerated containers)
- Opening and closing rail wagon twist-locks during cargo transfer
- Assisting with the loading, off-loading, and slacking of cargo in accordance with Transnet’s standard operating procedures
- Performing hooking and unhooking of cargo and equipment
- Tarping and untarping cargo where required
- Placing and removing dunnage (protective packaging or supports for cargo)
- Conducting cleaning of operational areas, including:
- Rail trucks
- Equipment and plant areas
- Workshops and storage sheds
- Offices and ablution facilities
- Completing relevant documentation such as accident or incident reports
- Identifying and using the correct cargo handling gear and lifting equipment safely and responsibly
This role involves working in high-traffic and often fast-paced port environments, requiring full attention to safety, communication, and teamwork.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience Required
To be considered for the Transnet Port Worker position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A Grade 12 / Matric Certificate (NQF Level 4)
- A minimum of 1 year of experience working in a port terminal environment or in a similar physically intensive industrial setting
Experience in cargo handling, logistics, or maritime operations will be considered an advantage.
