The Department of Basic Education invites young unemployed individuals who meet all the necessary criteria to apply for the teaching assistant positions 

Are you looking for a job as a school assistant or teacher’s assistant? This is a how-to guide for using SAYouth to apply for jobs as school assistants.

Who Qualifies For Phase 5 Teaching Assistant Jobs

  • Youth who participated in previous phases (I-IV) may apply, provided they meet all other criteria.
  • Applicants must be between 18 and 34 years old at the time of application.
  • Applicants must reside within 5km of the school they are applying to, or within 30km for those applying to farm or rural schools.
  • Only one opportunity per household is permitted.
  • Applicants must meet the specific requirements outlined for the chosen category and sub-category (role).
  • Applicants must be Not in Education, Not in Employment, and Not in Training (NEET).
  • Priority will be given to youth studying a teaching undergraduate degree part-time, via distance, or online, for work-integrated learning (WIL).
  • Priority will be given to youth with NQF level 6 or 7 qualifications.
  • Applicants must not be studying full-time.
  • Applicants must not be receiving any other stipend, wage, or salary.
  • Applicants must not be participating in a learnership.
  • Applicants must not be participating in other Department of Education programmes (e.g., EPWP, CWP, Learner Support Agents, etc.).
  • Applicants must have no criminal record, and a recent Police Clearance Certificate (no more than one month old) will be required for interviews.
  • Applicants must not have been unfairly advantaged due to relationships with school staff.
  • Applicants living with disabilities must provide a medical certificate confirming the nature of their disability.
  • Applicants must possess a valid South African Identity Book/Card.

In Phase 5, teaching assistants will receive a monthly stipend of R4,000.00 for six months, along with R30 for data. This programme targets youth aged 18-34, specifically those who will not turn 35 before the end of March 2026.

Teacher Assistant Jobs Application process on SA youth

  1. Visit the SAYouth.Mobi
  2. Register an account.
  3. Log in with your details.
  4. In the search bar, you should type ‘school assistant’ or search for the name of the school closest to you.
  5. A list of jobs available in your area will come up which will also include the opportunity cards for the schools that are closest to you. You must apply at schools that are within 5km from your home, or 30km for farm schools.
  6. Click the ‘read more’ button which would enable you to see further details about the job.
  7. If you are interested in the opportunity, click ‘apply now’.
  8. Follow the prompts and provide the relevant information to complete your application.
  9. You will then receive confirmation that your application has been successful.

Should you be shortlisted, you will be contacted through SMS or a phone call by the school. If you’re given an interview, you will need to ensure you bring the required documents.

If opportunities don’t appear, update your profile or location and try again.
