Salary Range: R202,856 to R338,651 per annum (dependent on qualifications and experience)
Minimum Job Requirements
To be eligible for the UCT Gardener or General Worker vacancies, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- A minimum of Grade 8 education.
- At least two years of hands-on experience in landscape maintenance or a related gardening role.
- Proficient in operating grounds maintenance tools such as:
- Lawn trimmers
- Weed eaters
- Chainsaws
- Blowers
- Irrigation systems
- Knowledge of safe and efficient gardening equipment operation.
- Familiarity with soil preparation, planting, weeding, fertilization, and general landscaping techniques.
- Must be physically fit to handle outdoor labor, including lifting and equipment handling.
- Ability to work well in a team and contribute to a collaborative work environment.
- Attention to detail and pride in maintaining neat, healthy outdoor spaces.
Additional Advantages (Preferred but Not Required)
- Practical horticultural experience supported by formal training or certification in gardening or landscaping.
- Knowledge of caring for invasive alien vegetation, heritage trees, and indigenous plant species.
- Understanding of sustainable gardening practices, including composting and organic pest control.
- Experience with biodiversity conservation and eco-friendly maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
1.Grounds Maintenance and Development
Maintain the campus grounds to high standards through:
- Weeding, watering, mowing, trimming, fertilizing, and edging lawns.
- Sweeping roadways and staircases, collecting litter, and clearing debris around the campus, including cages and gas facilities.
- Assisting with landscaping projects, including soil preparation, planting, and area development using both hard and soft landscaping techniques.
2.Horticultural and Arboriculture Care
Support the health and growth of trees, plants, and shrubs by:
- Pruning, pest control, soil cultivation, propagation, and seasonal growth care.
- Applying mulch and fertilizers and ensuring proper watering.
- Performing tree maintenance and arboriculture tasks, including the care of heritage trees and invasive species.
3. Health and Safety Compliance
Follow UCT’s strict Health and Safety regulations regarding:
- The safe use of power tools and farming chemicals.
- Regular inspection and maintenance of landscaping equipment.
- Reporting safety issues on time to the appropriate authority.
4.Teamwork and Collaboration
- Work as a valuable member of the Gardens and Grounds team.
- Collaborate with other UCT staff to maintain campus spaces in line with departmental needs.
5. Sustainability and Waste Management
Participate in UCT’s sustainability initiatives, including:
- Composting and responsible of getting rid of garden waste.
