The uMngeni-uThukela Water Training and Development Department, in collaboration with the Operations Division, is offering a one-year Water and Waste Water Treatment Learnership Programme for 2025.
This fully-funded learnership opportunity is ideal for unemployed youth under the age of 35 who reside in the deep rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal, specifically within the uMkhanyakude District and uMzinto District Municipality. Successful candidates will have the chance to earn a National Certificate in Water and Waste Water Treatment (NQF Level 2) while receiving both theoretical education and hands-on practical training at water treatment facilities in Richards Bay and the Jozini Water Treatment Plant.
Water & Waste Water Treatment Learnerships 2025 Overview
The Water & Waste Water Treatment Learnership 2025 is designed to empower young South Africans with limited access to tertiary education by offering a practical, skills-based alternative. Participants will:
- Attend structured classes
- Engage in practical, on-site training at water treatment plants
- Complete a Portfolio of Evidence (POE)
- Develop the technical knowledge and skills required to enter the water services industry

Who Can Apply for the Water & Waste Water Treatment Learnerships 2025 ?
To be eligible for this learnership, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be currently unemployed
- Be aged 18–35 years old
- Have completed Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics and Physical Science
- Reside in the rural areas of uMkhanyakude or uMzinto District Municipality
- Not hold any qualification above NQF Level 4
- Have a strong motivation to pursue a career in the water services sector
- Be willing to participate in full-time training and practical work for one year

Training Locations
Participants will gain real-world experience by working at the following locations:
